On the fourth day of the FISU World University Championships Futsal four matches were played in the women’s tournament. Brazil and Portugal have already secured their spots in the semifinals. Sunday marks the end of the women’s group stage and the start of the men’s quarterfinals.
Group B
Brasil – Finland 1:0 Germany – France 2:1
The defending champions, Brazil, finished Group B with a perfect record. However, their victory over Finland did not come easily. Although Brazil dominated the match from the start, their opponents effectively defended their goal. In the second half, Brazil managed to score the only goal of the match, securing a 1:0 victory.
The second match in Group B pitted two teams against each other, each with one win and one loss – both the Germans and the French had previously lost to the favored Brazilians. A victory in this head-to-head matchup would bring each team one step closer to advancing from the group stage and continuing their quest for medals.
From the very first minutes, the match was very evenly matched, and it was clear that a spot in the next round of the tournament was at stake. The score remained tied at zero for a long time. We had to wait until late in the second half for the first goal, when the Germans took the lead. The French tried to equalize, but their opponents extended their lead to 2:0. The French team didn’t give up and scored a consolation goal in the final second of the match. Ultimately, the Germans won 2:1.
Group A
Poland – Chinese Taipei 3:1 Portugal – USA 10:1
The Polish women secured a valuable victory over the Chinese Taipei team and significantly improved their chances of advancing to the semifinals. However, it was the opponents who opened the scoring, taking a 1:0 lead in the eighth minute. The Polish University National Team quickly stepped up its attacks on the opponents’ goal and managed to turn the game around before halftime. First, Zuzanna Maronde scored, tying the game at 1:1, and a few dozen seconds later, Maria Suwada increased the lead to 2:1. In the second half, Dobrosława Skorupska sealed the 3:1 victory with a 10-meter penalty.
The Polish women thus concluded their group stage competition. Thanks to this victory, they solidified their second-place position in Group A. To advance to the medal round, they must now hope that the group-leading Portuguese team defeats Chinese Taipei.
The Portuguese women secured another convincing victory. It didn’t take long for the favorites to score their first goal – they took a 1:0 lead in the very first minute of the match. The Americans managed to tie the score at 1:1, but the Portuguese team quickly regained control of the match and were back in the lead less than two minutes later. Moments later, the Portuguese extended their lead to 3:1, and scored one more goal before halftime.
The Portuguese team started the second half with a bang and quickly scored to make it 5:1. The Portuguese women’s dominance was never in doubt at any point in the match. The favorites to win a medal at this year’s World Youth Championships in futsal scored four more goals, with one of them coming off an own goal. Ana Oliveira scored three goals for the Portuguese national team. With a perfect record, Portugal leads Group B.
